When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Dr. Markowitz was one of the earliest adapters to telemedicine, and she continues to see many patients via teledermatology with HIPAA compliant video visits.

To facilitate a thorough skin exam, patients are instructed to take photos or videos of any areas of concern using their smartphone, iPad, or laptop. The images are then sent to Dr. Makowitz, who analyzes them and discusses her findings on a video chat with the patient. When a spot merits closer examination, Dr. Markowitz may encourage the patient to purchase an at-home dermatoscope (typically under $100) that attaches to their phone and allows the patient to take and send more detailed photos to Dr. Markowitz for analysis.
